The style crowds’ obsession with sneakers is not ending anytime soon, whether it be a classic white leather low cut, chunky “dad sneaker” or a statement neon kick there is a sneaker for any style. However although the humble sneaker is the primary choice for street stylers many of my clients don’t know how to wear a sneaker without feeling like they are heading to the gym or into “dowdy parent” territory.
So what do you style your sneakers with to create optimum style with function? I have 5 outfit tips for you.
Consider hem length
The biggest fear is that sneakers won’t feel cool enough or stylish enough, more your dad’s denim & sneaker combo from the 90’s than 2020 model off duty, and yet denim & sneakers are the perfect match. To keep the look feeling modern and polished consider jean hems that sit above the top of your sneakers, slightly cropped styles or 7/8 lengths are perfect, or you could simply cuff your hems. But why cropped hems? A cropped hem allows a glimpse of ankle which is an illusion creating a longer figure and by doing so can balance out a chunkier shoe like a sneaker.
Play with feminine pieces
Sneakers add a “cool girl” athleisure feel to feminine pieces such a floaty dresses and midi skirts. This is the ultimate “model off duty” look, pairing unexpected pieces to create an outfit with personality and very little effort.
Take sparkles & metallic to the street
Allow your favourite party pieces, those sequin tops, metallic skirts and embellished dresses to earn their place as every day wear by pairing with a casual shoe, the perfect option? A sneaker of course.
Power suits
Play down the work wear feel of suits and coordinated sets by swapping your usual heels for flat kicks. It’s the chicest way to do workwear and looks equally good with both pant and skirt suits.
When in doubt add a polished topper
If an outfit still doesn’t feel “just right” add extra polish with a structured blazer or leather jacket (a leather jacket can make even a full head to toe gym outfit look street ready).
My recommendations:
You can never go wrong with a low cut white sneaker, this cut and colour will go with any outfit.
Adidas Stan Smith (the classic)
Veja Esplar (for the ethically conscious)
For those wanting to follow the street style crowd then opt for a chunkier sole.
For the trend setter it’s all about high tops and statement colours in 2020.
